Final Newsletter of This School Year

School Garden Progress
Thank you to Amy Roche for her excellent barefoot rototilling work. It took much longer than planned and Amy fought hard and defeated the grass.
Thank You Tom Prosser and Natalie Murphy for helping dig, plant, and put up the chicken wire. It went so quickly with all this help!
Thank You Andrea Schulte for signing up to help care for the garden. Your help is appreciated.
There were 12 Roma tomato plants planted and a row of onions. Two onions are poking up, and three tomato plants have disappeared. Other than that, not much else going on.

Items Needed for the Garden:
Hose and sprayer

School Garden Summer Schedule
Can you and your family help maintain the school garden? This would require maybe ½ hour of your time. It’s a good way to exercise your body, mind and spirit.

Once or twice during your week, stop down to the garden and weed and water the plants. All equipment will be provided.

Spring Meeting Highlights

• There were no nominations for officers. We need a secretary and two VPs, both for a two -year term.

It is been an assumption that each family serve on the Home & School Board at some time during their child(ren)’s tenure. Please make time in your busy schedules to make this work.

Being president of H&S does not and should not mean you are the Volunteer of the Year. If everyone pitches in and helps, it is much more enjoyable and not so daunting. Come on, parents!

• There have been some changes to the budget, which are outlined on the back of this newsletter.

• It seemed to be the consensus that everyone is worn out from all the fundraising. A committee was formed to investigate different fundraisers. Lisa Emler, Cindy Miller, Barb Hesselberg and Rick Raatz volunteered to form this committee.

• 14 children came to the meeting to play in the Kindergarten room and were looked after by several Seventh Graders. Thank you to them and to Mrs. Reischel for their generous donation of time and resources.

Thank you to everyone who attended. Your input and discussion made it a very productive meeting!

Greeting Cards for Sale $1.50 each

If you need a birthday, First Communion, wedding card, sympathy card or any kind of greeting card, there is a selection of hand-made cards for sale in the school office. 100% of the profit goes toward Home and School. So far we have sold $74 in cards!

School Garden

Our seeds have sprouted and are growing! Yeah! for our first accomplishment. Let’s hope the weather cooperates and permits the planting of our vegetables for the Chili Luncheon. Plan to dig on May 16th, weather permitting.

Thank you to everyone who turned in cardboard egg cartons. We still need some essential items:

Hose and sprayer
Plastic barrel for rain barrel
Chicken wire, rebar or fence posts
Shovels, hoes, garden rakes
Small plastic plant containers

We will likely have some extra plants available for sale. We will keep you posted with the details in the coming weeks.

Here’s a Green Idea:

We are considering starting a school garden.  Our thoughts are to start out small and grow enough tomatoes for either the spaghetti dinner or another chili luncheon.

This could be an educational experience for our school children by learning how to start plants from seed, how to prepare the soil for a garden, how to maintain an organic garden, how to compost and how to harvest and preserve items from our garden.

  • Would you and/or your children be interested in a project like this?
  • Would you be willing to donate money or materials to get this project started?

If you have any ideas, information, or questions, please contact Kathy Raatz at 920-623-2285.
